Every September, Montessorians around the world come together with their students to observe the International Day of Peace.
This happens in the midst of the back-to-school whirlwind, as little ones adjust to time away from their parents and older students settle back into routines.
Unintentionally, peace day gifts us the opportunity to pause and reflect on how peace is the foundation upon which our classrooms are built.
Because in a Montessori classroom, peace is not an isolated lesson.
It is not a single shelf or a one-time discussion.
Peace is the natural outcome of everything we teach.
It is in the way our children care for their environment, how they resolve conflict, and how they see and celebrate diversity.
This year, to mark Peace Day, we are thrilled to announce the opening of our very own Little Free Library, a small space with a big mission: to share books, spread knowledge, and inspire little minds.
We put this project together with the belief that books are amongst the most powerful tools we can offer children and the hope that by guiding them to care deeply about their community, we are helping to raise a generation of peacemakers capable of transforming their generation and those to follow.
The Little Free Library stands as a symbol of that hope and of the collective effort from our community that brought it to life.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the local businesses and families who made it possible and we invite all of our families to stop by, take a book, leave a book, and join us in spreading peace — one story at a time.
“Do we believe and constantly insist that cooperation among the peoples of the world is necessary in order to bring about peace? If so, what is needed first of all is collaboration with children.“
-Maria Montessori, International Montessori Congress, 1937
This project came to life through the generosity of the Yip family, who donated last year’s Cirque du Soleil tickets for our fundraiser, and every community member who participated in the ticket raffle. The Little Free Library was handcrafted by the local small business, Brilliant Jo-B. The step stones were kindly donated by Total Contracting and Landscaping. Our engraved plaque was generously made by Alisson Sports and the flowers sourced from our teacher’s personal gardens.
